These are some of the resources we use to find and try to understand rock art. At times, a photo will have a reference to one or more of these resources.

Castleton, Kenneth Bitner. Petroglyphs and Pictographs of Utah Volume Two, the South, Central, West and Northwest. Salt Lake City, Utah: Utah Museum Of Natural History, 1987.
Dr. Castleton was a well-respected physician and surgeon in Salt Lake. At some point, Dr. Castleton became interested in Native American rock art. After retiring from medicine, he visited and photographed hundreds of rock art sites in Utah and published the volumes above. The J. Willard Marriott Library has a large collection of his and his associates' photographs in its Special Collections.
Castleton's books are invaluable for locating petroglyphs and pictographs; we use them extensively, and they generally accompany us on our outings. However, while I understand why, they can sometimes be frustrating because he is very vague about the locations of some panels. I suspect he didn't want the unknown and lesser-known sites to be vandalized, as many of the well-known sites have been.
